“The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice and the Department of State has issued a Level 4 Travel Advisory advising against all travel to India,” the State Department said in a statement. “Level 4 is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks.” The statement continued, “The Department of State advises that U.S. citizens not travel to the country or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so....

The change significantly increases the number of countries with the highest level of travel advisory. Before the change, only 34 countries were in the State Department’s highest advisory level, while the CDC was urging travelers to reconsider plans for visiting all countries.
