Starfield takes Bethesda Game Studio’s design philosophy to outer space and players will be able to explore all sorts of planets throughout their playthrough. Its size and scope seem massive, as Starfield will let players explore over 100 Solar Systems and thousands of planets. This number includes both hand-crafted planets and procedurally-generated ones like in No Man’s Sky. Now, one Starfield fan compares a planet’s size to another Bethesda developed game.

A Reddit user named Koocai takes an image from Starfield and compares its size to the world of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. As seen in the image, Koocai states that a location on the planet is 1.15 kilometers or 0.71 miles away from the player. They then claim that Skyrim’s size was around 5 kilometers or 3 miles in length, prompting a discussion on how Starfield’s playable areas may be astoundingly large when compared to Skyrim.
One fan points out that The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim was packed with content and scale doesn’t mean much when the world is empty. They take the example of Elite Dangerous, which seemingly has 400 billion stars with all of them being empty. The user mentions that the planets in Starfield may not be as dense as the regions found in Skyrim.
In one of the replies, the poster Koocai states that there is nothing wrong with Starfield’s locations being massive as long as players aren’t forced to walk the entire distance. Koocai then mentions that ground and air vehicles are mandatory for a game like Starfield in their opinion. This seems to be a popular sentiment among players as other users also talk about a possible transport system to help gamers traverse these giant planets.
It’ll be interesting to how Bethesda Game Studios approaches world design when Starfield comes out next year. Microsoft had recently commented on the release schedule and confirmed that Redfall will launch before Starfield in the first half of 2023. After Starfield, The Elder Scrolls 6 will probably enter the full production phase at Bethesda Game Studios, and the studio has also confirmed that Fallout 5 will launch after TES 6.
Starfield releases in 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
