One of the features that Bethesda revealed at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase was Starfield’s character creation tools. Like Bethesda’s other big open world RPGs, Starfield players will be able to create their own character from scratch. However, Bethesda didn’t reveal if the Starfield protagonist would be voiced or not. Most of Bethesda’s games do not feature voiced protagonists, though the exception to that rule is Fallout 4.

Bethesda has now confirmed that Starfield will not have a voiced protagonist, and that all the conversations in the game will be first-person. This is in line with the majority of Bethesda’s games, including Skyrim, and so it’s not a huge surprise. So far, the confirmation that Starfield will not have a voiced protagonist has generated a mixed response online.

Some Starfield fans are praising the decision, as they prefer having an unvoiced protagonist. For some, this helps with immersion, as they aren’t hearing another person’s voice speak when choosing dialogue options. Others also like how a voiceless protagonist speeds up the game a bit, as they aren’t sitting there listening to excess dialogue. Critics of the decision feel as though a voiced protagonist should be standard and think that it makes the game feel lesser when compared to other big budget games.

The voiced protagonist debate is far from the only thing Bethesda fans are discussing after the Starfield reveal. The reveal ended with Bethesda’s Todd Howard confirming that Starfield will have thousands of planets for players to explore, and some are worried that will mean that most of the planets will be underwhelming. Others are excited about Starfield’s ambitious scope, though it remains to be seen if the game will live up to the high expectations set by Bethesda’s previous titles. Fans will just have to play it for themselves to be sure.

Starfield will launch in 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X.
