One notable addition is Ysa Penarejo as Jade, the daughter of Green Lantern/Alan Scott and successor to his power. Panarejo was teased in Stargirl season 1 as an unknown character alongside Nick Tarabay and Jonathan Cake as new villains Eclipso and Shade, though Tarabay appears to be absent from this particular trailer. While Jade is seen fighting with Brec Bassinger’s Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl, it’s pretty clear that she’ll end up joining the team at some point. Any Justice Society worth its salt needs a Green Lantern, after all.

Another notable (albeit brief) appearance includes the genie known as Thunderbolt, who resided in that ominous-looking pen that kept showing up in season 1 of Stargirl. Viewers with a good ear will recognize the voice of comedian Jim Gaffigan behind the neon jinn, which is sure to provide for some interesting dynamics between Thunderbolt and his new wielder Jakeem Williams (played by Alkoya Brunson). The inevitable return of Meg DeLacy’s Cindy Burman is also bound to shake things up, as the villainous thorn in Courtney’s side (but also friend, maybe?) makes a brief comeback in the trailer following her supposed demise at the end of season 1.
Stargirl debuted its first season to critical and audience acclaim. It follows the teenage Courtney as she discovers the legacy of the long-gone Justice Society of America, taking up the mantle of Stargirl after the staff of the group’s old leader seemingly chose her as its new wielder. With the help of her stepfather and former member of the original JSA Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), she sets out to rebuild the society in order to battle evil forces that have only grown in the original team’s absence.
The first season of Stargirl already introduced a number of interesting new characters, including Anjelika Washington as Courtney’s friend Beth (and the new Dr. Mid-Nite), Yvette Monreal as Yolanda Montez/Wildcat, and Cameron Gellman as Rick Tyler/Hourman. Bringing in even more to a cast this rich with talent might feel a bit bloated in any other series, but Stargirl boasts some top quality from all its performers, so more people will probably just mean more fun. Perhaps the series could also find a way to add DC’s Wonder Girl to the roster now that the network has passed on the heroine’s own standalone show.
There are only a few months left until Stargirl premieres its second season, which gives fans plenty of time to rewatch the first in preparation. This is a DC show, after all. Anyone who remembers everything they need to know about it after just one viewing is probably a superhero themself.
Stargirl season 2 premieres on August 10th, 2021, on The CW.
