With Steam Deck Q4 emails going out recently, it looks as though people who have pre-ordered one should be able to get it by the end of the year, possibly in time for Christmas. That’s a pretty exciting prospect for anyone who’s been wanting to purchase the device, and it really shows how Valve, having increased production not long ago, has been able to send them out to customers at a rate of knots.

Given that, it’s perhaps not too surprising that more than a million units of the Steam Deck have been sent out so far. That’s according to a video from YouTube channel Gaming On Linux. During the Q&A session at the KDE conference, which discussed Linux on the Steam Deck, keynote speaker David Edmundson confirmed that Valve had surpassed this impressive milestone recently, adding that the company is still processing back orders which could lead to an additional third in sales. When the portable device released at the start of 2022, it quickly established itself as a formidable force in the mobile gaming market. The Steam Deck has thousands of verified or playable games, with this number going up all the time. It’s also been noteworthy for its versatility, supporting modifications, emulators, and even other operating systems like Windows.
It’s quite a different story to the way things used to be. Valve had a lackluster reputation when it came to hardware, but the Steam Deck has shown that the Half-Life and Left 4 Dead studio can step outside the software sphere. The fact that other companies now want to make their own portable systems shows just how much of an impact the Deck has had on the industry.
