However, a statement and slide shown during the Google for Games developer summit set tongues wagging worldwide with the news that Steam is coming to Chrome OS, bringing the world’s biggest gaming platform to Chromebooks at last.

Steam Is Coming to Chrome OS—But Not Quite Yet

Google’s announcement came somewhat as a shock to the world of Chromebook users and, indeed, gamers. Speaking at the Google for Games developer summit keynote, Google product director Greg Hartrell said, “The Steam alpha just launched, making this long-time PC game store available on select Chromebooks for users to try.”

Hartrell even encouraged users to go forth and explore the new Chromebook community forum dedicated to Steam’s Chrome OS launch. Except, there was nothing to be found when they got there, and it appears the surprise announcement was just that.

The Steam to Chrome OS community page now features an actual statement detailing a very rough outline.

So, When Is Steam Coming to Chrome OS?

As per the community message, you’ll be waiting a while longer for Steam’s extensive gaming library to appear on Chrome OS.

When Steam finally makes the jump to Chrome OS, it’ll launch to a very small number of users, exclusively to the Chrome OS Dev channel. Until then, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for more announcements regarding Steam on Chrome OS.
